This is the first CD-release of the first recordings of these works, authorized by the composer, who was present during the recordings. The legendary Kolisch quartet has created the quartets Nos. 3 and 4. A milestone in the history of interpretation.

"It is difficult to imagine a more valuable or instructive historical release that the two-disc Archiphon set ..... The booklet with this set is a masterpiece of its kind, starting with Schoenberg´s own program notes for the original 78-rpm records ...." (Fanfare)

"These incredibly moving documents, tailed by brief spoken commentaries, are now available on CD, and those readers who might doubt that durability of this music might remember that even by 1936, the Kolisch Quartet were playing the first three quartets by heart." (Gramophone)

„The four play this music in a completely atypical manner: not with sober, dispassionate calculation but with impulsive, expansive phrasing: a Schoenberg á la Brahms, so to speak, and not à la Boulez.“ (SZENE)
