During the twenties and thirties the Kolisch Quartet were among the most famous chamber ensembles. It was especially admired because of their playing by heart. This was no simple gag but the result of each member having played the work during the rehearsals from the full score, each knowing the parts of the others.

This CD contains all Schubert recordings by the Kolisch Quartet (Rudolf Kolisch, Eugene Lehner, Felix Khuner, Benar Heifetz)

„The musicians were in particularly close contact with the Viennese School of Schoenberg. The roots of Rudolf Kolisch and his ensemble in the Vienna string tradition, and their connection to the avant garde, make these documents highly interesting. With these recordings a high point in intensive chamber music interpretation is made newly accessible.“ (FonoForum)
